UCU operates a political fund which expressly does not contribute to any political party, but is used for campaigning and lobbying to promote the interests of UCU members. The contribution level is one percent of the national subscription rate. Members may opt in to the fund.

UCU offer free membership* to staff in the following categories:

•enrolled PhD students who are also contracted to teach at the higher education institution at which they are registered for their PhD studies. Standard Free membership is not designed for existing staff who subsequently register for a PhD where they work.

•staff members working in further education who are directly involved in teaching and assessing students but on inferior terms and lower pay than colleagues on a lecturer's contract of employment.

*Free membership includes access to all the benefits of full membership and is provided for a maximum of one year from registration. Free membership is provided on the basis that you inform UCU promptly when your circumstances change and you secure a permanent or fixed term contract in HE of at least one year's duration and in FE if you secured a permanent or fixed term contract of at least one year's duration on your employer's main teaching pay spine.
